When first entering the Army we were being served C-Rations (telling my age!)😆
Anyway, MRE’s first came out around 81-82 and they were horrible. Example, a beef patty was freeze dried, literally equivalent to cardboard, no exaggeration. This patty had to be soaked in water until becoming soft, and it tasted like s#%t.
This being an example of how horrible the meals were, and no more than 500 calories per meal.
When I was deployed to Honduras during the Sandanista/Contra engagements. I was with the 82nd Airborne and was in my first firefight. Anyway, by this time the MRE’s had became a lot better due to not using the freeze dried process and most importantly feedback from the troops in the field.
They had so many good meals, BBQ Beefpatties, Chicken and Rice, Spaghetti and meat sauce, and my favorite Omelette. Then the coup to top it all off was adding the small tobasco bottles 😃👍🏼❤️
The current MRE’s are just as good today as yesterday, and the most important thing is the amount of calories. When in Iraq we were getting by on two, sometimes maybe three meals a day and it was enough to get us through what we had to do up in N. Iraq. Now I’m saving them as part of my prepper storage. I’ve been prepping since 2016 (10 years) and the MRE’s are just one of the many layers for my preps.
